The Basics of Motivational Interviewing (online)

In this Level 1 workshop, which will be given online over 6 half days due to the pandemic situation, you will learn and practice the basics of Motivational Interviewing (MI): how to help people change (especially when it comes to challenging clients), develop your empathy and use your energy more efficiently.

This workshop teaches the spirit of MI, its processes and tools in an experiential and interactive learning style. You will learn to listen for — and increase the frequency and strength of — your clients’ discourse for change, as well as support their autonomy. You will come to know when to use, and when not to use MI; explore the fundamentals of this approach; and discover ways of integrating MI practices into other treatment approaches.

You will also have the opportunity to discuss the components of MI and to practice them through real-plays and other exercises.

  • Understand the spirit of MI that is fundamental to the practice;
  • Identify and practice the four processes of an MI intervention (engagement, focusing, evoking and planning);
  • Develop skills in using basic MI tools: open questions, empathic reflection (simple and complex), affirmations, and summaries;
  • Learn other ways to address ambivalence;
  • Use effective strategies to reduce discord and move clients from “sustain talk” to “change talk”.
